FAMILY OF ROTARY

Our membership cares deeply about the needs and concerns of our members. We don’t want to miss an opportunity to reach out in friendship when such concerns arise. The chairperson of this committee is Lynn Dunn and all news should be directed to her at lynn.dunn@rmcpa.com

President John’s Message

This week we have the special privilege to hear from Past Rotary International President John Germ about The Rotary Foundation and Rotary’s campaign to end Polio throughout the world.  The Rotary Foundation was founded over 100 years ago at the RI Convention in Atlanta in 1917.  Since it was founded, the Foundation has spent more than $4 billion on life-changing, sustainable projects.

The Rotary Foundation’s mission is to help Rotary members advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace by improving health, providing quality education, improving the environment, and alleviating poverty.  What impact do our donations have?

·        For as little as 60 cents, a child can be protected from polio.

·        $50 can provide clean water to help fight waterborne illness.

·        $500 can launch an anti-bullying campaign and create a safe environment for children.

This week, we will recognize Rotarians who have reached their first Paul Harris Fellow giving level and others who reach a Paul Harris+ level.  We still have a special matching opportunity for a one for one match of your donations to the Rotary Foundation through December. If you have questions about the matching funds or how to get to your first or next level of giving, contact our Foundation Chair, Leslie Bassett.

John Germ
Speaker for Thursday, Nov. 10: John Germ Rotary Chair End Polio Now

Join us Thursday to welcome John Germ to our club. He will bring us up to date on Rotary's efforts to End Polio NOW.  In his role as Rotary's Chair of the End Polio Now Committee, John is on the front lines of Rotary's key mission...ending polio forever. Don't miss this chance to hear from John in person and to thank him for his leadership and to support our club in this important fight!

John F. Germ is the retired board chair and CEO of Campbell & Associates Inc., consulting engineers. He joined the firm as an engineer in 1965 after four years in the U.S. Air Force. He served on the boards of several organizations, including the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Hospital Authority Board of Trustees, and as board chair of the Public Education Foundation, Orange Grove Center Inc., the Miracle League Chattanooga, and Blood Assurance Inc. He is the founder and treasurer of the Chattanooga State Technical Community College Foundation and president of the Tennessee Jaycee Foundation. He is also the founder of Camp Discovery, a camp for intellectually and developmentally disabled individuals.

Germ was awarded the Tennessee Young Man of the Year in 1970; Engineer of the Year in 1976; Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year in 1992 and Tennessee Community Organization’s Volunteer of the Year in 2009. He is the recipient of the Boy Scouts Silver Beaver Award and the Arthritis Foundation Circle of Hope Award.

Germ joined Rotary in 1976 and has served RI as president in 2016-17, vice president, director, Foundation trustee, and vice chair, aide to the Foundation trustee chair, chair of Rotary’s $200 Million Challenge, RI Board Executive Committee member, chair of numerous committees, area coordinator, and RI training leader. In 2013, the White House recognized him as a Champion of Change.

Germ has received Rotary’s Service Above Self Award and the Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service and Rotary Foundation Distinguished Service Award. He and his wife, Judy, are Foundation Benefactors and members of the Arch Klumph Society.

They have four children and six grandchildren.

Rotary Club of Sandy Springs
Wine Tasting supporting Vision To Learn

Please join us Sunday, November 13 from 3-5 PM for the Rotary Club of Sandy Springs wine

tasting event at the Brooklyn Café. The event will raise funds to support an important Rotary

Vision To Learn project for our community.

Did you know… about one in five kids will naturally need glasses to see the board, read a book,

or participate in class. Unfortunately, in underserved communities across the country, 95% of

kids who need glasses, about 2,000,000 in total, do not have them. What chance does each of

these children have to succeed in school, let alone break free from poverty? Vision To Learn

was founded to make sure every child has the glasses he or she needs to succeed in school and

in life. Its mobile clinics solve the problem by bringing eye exams and glasses, free of charge, to

children at schools in underserved communities.

Let’s make sure our Sandy Springs children have the glasses they need to learn well. Check out

this YouTube video.

Our goal is to provide more than 1000 pair of eyeglasses to our elementary schools: Ison Springs, Dunwoody Springs,

Lake Forest and Spalding Drive.

Please come out to support Rotary’s Vision To Learn project and enjoy top selling wines for a

great cause. Meet up with your Sandy Springs friends and folks who will become friends, taste

lots of good wine and purchase the wines you like for less than the retail price.

A special thanks to Jeff Trump, owner of the Brooklyn Café, for his willingness to open up his

restaurant to enjoy wine and heavy hors d'oeuvres for our Vision Project.

The link to access the course will be shared soon.

After Hours Learns about Be THE Voice

It's cool to be kind! Roswell Rotary's own Debbie Cwalina and Executive Director of Be THE Voice was the RRAH guest speaker last week! The club loved hearing about her organization's mission and watching a few videos from the Be THE Voice program. After Hours' two main focus areas are veterans and mental health, so it was informative to learn about an initiative that addresses students' mental health struggles.
