We Can't Take Clean Water for Granted
President John's Message

You are thirsty.  You go to your sink and turn on the faucet.  Clean, drinkable water comes out.  But it's not always a guarantee.  Ask the people of Jackson, Mississippi.

Last week we heard what Past President A.D. Dalton and our club have done to help the folks in Jackson through their water crisis. Half of the water our club bought was delivered on September 15th and the last half is due to arrive this week.

This week our own City of Roswell Water Department folks - Chris Boyd and Brian Watson - will tell us about how Roswell has prepared to avoid the type of problems Jackson has experienced this summer.  It's not something we can take for granted.

See you Thursday!

Let's Talk About Water
Program Sept 27: Chris Boyd and Brian Watson

Do you ever think about how our Roswell water is clean and delicious? These past few weeks Roswell Rotarians partnered with other groups to send clean water to Mississippi. We often take for granted our crystal clear, tasty Roswell water!

This week we will hear from the award winning Roswell Waterworks team:

Brian J. Watson, P.E., P.H., D.WRE, Deputy Director of Environmental/Public Works The Roswell Environmental/Public Works Department oversees services pertaining to water, sanitation, environmental compliance/education, and engineering.

Chris Boyd, Water Utility Manager The Roswell Water Utility is proud to serve approximately 5,600 customers. The City operates the Roswell Water Treatment Plant, which is capable of producing 3.3 million gallons of water per day and maintains 89 miles of distribution waterline mains in order to get the highest quality water delivered to the customer.

The City has been the recipient, for 4 years in a row, of the Gold Award which is given to treatment plants which meet above all of the state standards for water production.

Don't miss this opportunity to hear about the fantastic job being done in the City of Roswell to make sure the taps run clean for us all.

New Member Spotlight
Welcome New Member: Joe Gillespie

Schools attended  University of Notre Dame (Go Irish!)

Major  Graduated January of 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting

Where we live and have lived   My family and I have resided in Roswell for a little over six years. My wife and I grew up in Niles, MI.

Spouse  I have been married to my lovely wife, Sara, for 10 years. Sara attended Saint Mary’s College.

Kids and ages  We have two elementary age children, a son (10) and daughter (8).

Why I joined Roswell Rotary Because it is a great organization of individuals who work to help our community and world become a better place. The Roswell Rotary is an exceptional organization to belong to and continue our service to build a strong community.

Other involvement in community  I have always had an interest in helping less fortunate families and children.  It is important to me to help continue to foster growth within the community as well as make a positive impact on our world with a group of unique dedicated individuals. It is also important that I set a strong example for my children and their friends, providing service to create positive lasting change. My wife and I make a point to serve in the ways we can based on our schedules. We have donated our time to various charity events including the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation ,the Masons 24 golf outing, Roswell Youth Lacrosse program and our children's school’s PTA. We also sponsor a family annually through the Salvation Army Angel Tree program.

Career I began my career with the Chicago, IL location of a California based field examination firm that provided field exams to banks and finance companies in the asset-based lending industry. Within four years I was promoted to Regional Exam Manager and moved to Atlanta, GA to open the Southeast office spending 12 years as the Atlanta Regional Exam Manager. During this time, I developed a market in the region and grew the office from one employee in Atlanta, to six examiners in the Southeast. At the beginning of 2019 I started a field examination firm (Top Tier Examinations Services) that services the asset-based lending industry. Our clients consist of banks and financial institutions locally, nationally, and internationally. Currently we have approximately 12 employees located in nine different states.

Interesting Facts Two interesting facts about me are that my wife and I have known each other since we were eight years old (there may or may not be a picture of us roller skating when we were 8 or 9). Also, I am a bit of a sneakerhead, so if you see me outside of work attire, you are likely to see a pair of Jordans on my feet (weather permitting of course).

After Hours Serves Spaghetti Lunch to Veterans at VEO

This past Saturday, After Hours visited the Veterans Empowerment Organization (VEO) to serve the veteran residents a delicious and homemade spaghetti lunch. Shout-out to John Davies who made the pasta from scratch and Lindsay Davies for spearheading the effort. Every plate was clean and the vets were coming back for more!

After Hours Meeting Recap

Did you know September is National Suicide Prevention Month? After Hours welcomed a very special guest, mental health advocate Lynn Prothero. Lynn serves on the board for the Georgia Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, is a Crisis Text Line volunteer and is a Talk Saves Lives educator. She spoke about the signs to look for in a suicidal person and what to do if a family member or friend is having suicidal thoughts. It was a very important and worthwhile discussion to have.

The club also officially welcomed three new members to the Rotary family! Please help us welcome Will Albers, Grant Miller and Gabriel Kelly.

The next After Hours meeting is Tuesday, October 4th at  6:30 at the Artillery Room @ Gate City.
